As Somalia enters a new chapter, we must look forward with hope and optimism. The election of President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud marks a significant turning point, and we extend my heartfelt congratulations to him. This is a moment to embrace collective dialogue and reconciliation, bringing together like-minded compatriots for the greater good of our nation.
After extensive consultations with the governing body of our party, Xisbiga Isbahaysiga Mustaqbalka (the Alliance for the Future), it was decided, with a heavy heart, not to put my name forward as a candidate in this Presidential election. The reason is simple – the election process, under the leadership of former President Farmajo, was deeply flawed. It was marked by unconstitutionality and corruption, and as a party committed to fighting corruption, we could not, in good conscience, participate in such a process.
The corrupt practices that continue to plague Somalia’s political landscape remain our greatest obstacle. As I wrote in my book, My Life for Somalia, the current electoral system is archaic and corrupt, a system we cannot support. However, our vision remains clear: we are focused on fighting the next Presidential election on the foundation of the One Man, One Vote system. This is the only way to ensure a Parliament and a President elected by the people, for the people.
Despite my name not being put forward, our party played a crucial role in ensuring the defeat of former President Farmajo. His administration, which clung to power unconstitutionally since February 2021, has done immeasurable harm to Somalia’s reputation on the world stage. It is time to move forward and turn the page.
Under the leadership of President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, we now have an opportunity to focus on the real issues that matter: fighting extremism, addressing poverty and unemployment, improving education, and ensuring the rights and equality of every citizen. We must tackle these challenges head-on, for the future of every Somali man, woman, and child.
I urge all political parties and stakeholders who wish to see Somalia fulfil its true potential to come together. Let us work collectively for the future, prosperity, and hope of all Somalis. The time is now – let us not waste it!
