The removal of XIM Chair Abshir Aden Ferro’s article from Nation Africa has sent a chilling message across the region – free speech and media independence are increasingly under siege.
Ferro’s commentary, which criticised Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s reckless behaviour in the Horn of Africa, was reportedly pulled after pressure from the Ethiopian government. His article examined Abiy’s provocative actions, particularly on port access and regional interference, and how they are deepening fractures within Ethiopia and threatening Somalia’s sovereignty.
“By censoring a legitimate analysis, Nation Media has shown it is willing to bend to political pressure rather than uphold its journalistic responsibility to the truth,” Ferro said following the takedown.
The Alliance for the Future Party leader condemned the move as a dangerous precedent – one that suggests powerful interests can dictate what the public is allowed to read.
A Blow to Press Freedom
The decision by Nation Media to remove the article is not just editorial – it is political. It calls into question the outlet’s supposed commitment to free expression and its role as a watchdog for the people.
“This act of silencing a critical voice exposes the deep rot within a media outlet that claims to stand for free speech and the public’s right to know,” Ferro said.
Instead of standing firm in defence of journalistic integrity, Nation Media’s actions have shielded a controversial leader from scrutiny. Ferro noted that this betrayal erodes trust in the press and undermines democratic accountability across East Africa.
Journalism Must Not Bow to Power
In times of regional uncertainty and growing instability, transparency and truth must be protected – not suppressed. Ferro’s article was a legitimate critique of a leader whose decisions are placing millions at risk. Its removal raises urgent questions about media independence in Kenya and the broader region.
“By choosing silence, Nation Media has chosen complicity. The public deserves better.”
Abshir Aden Ferro and the Alliance for the Future Party remain committed to telling uncomfortable truths, defending Somalia’s sovereignty, and standing against any form of repression – whether political or editorial.
