The tragedy in Afghanistan, marked by the overwhelming failure of 20 years of Western intervention, mirrors troubling developments in Somalia. Abshir Aden Ferro, a Somali political leader, draws alarming parallels between the two nations, citing the rise of radical groups like Al-Shabaab and their recruitment of youth, similar to the Taliban’s efforts in Afghanistan. In both countries, ineffective governance, corruption, and poor security measures have led to dire consequences.
Ferro highlights the danger of Somalia slipping into the same chaos, particularly under former President Farmajo’s corrupt leadership, which refused to hold true elections and perpetuated the clan system. He warns that, like Afghanistan, Somalia risks falling under the control of radical groups such as Al-Shabaab if the international community fails to address the deep-rooted issues. He urges world governments to recognize the urgency of the situation and take action before Somalia suffers the same fate.
