Yesterday, I made the difficult decision to completely remove my candidacy billboards in the capital city of Mogadishu, Somalia. This act was not just a gesture; it was a response to the grim reality our country is facing. Somalia, once again, has been plunged into darkness. The rights of our people and the constitution are being trampled, and the hopes of rebuilding our nation are being shattered by a leadership that chooses violence over democracy. The dream of a peaceful and prosperous Somalia feels increasingly out of reach.
The situation is critical. Ex-President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, in collaboration with his allies – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia and President Isaias Afewerki of Eritrea – has created a triangle strategy aimed at subjugating Somalia. They have orchestrated what can only be described as a military coup, kidnapping our people and our homeland, and in doing so, they have shattered the fragile hope of peace. These actions do not only harm Somalia but have grave implications for the entire Horn of Africa. If this violence continues, the consequences will be felt across the region.
May God protect us all from the devastating fallout of this miscalculation.
I want to be clear: I have not withdrawn my candidacy. I have waited patiently for Farmajo to use the ballot instead of the bullet, as was promised. I will return my billboards, and I will re-enter the political contest when the dictator Farmajo steps down and leaves our country. But if any Somali is harmed or if Somali blood is shed in this coup, I will not stand idly by. I will take every measure within my power to bring those responsible to justice through the international courts and human rights organisations.
I urge all candidates, politicians, and the public to stand united against this three-pronged attack on our people, our country, and our flag. Now, more than ever, we must come together. Our shared dream is simple but powerful: for Somalia to find peace again so that we can rebuild and live our lives free from violence and fear.
The future of Somalia lies in our hands, and we must fight for a nation where democracy, peace, and justice prevail.
