In the seventh edition of “My African Hour”, Franco-Somali businessman and 2026 Somali presidential candidate Abshir Aden Ferro shares critical insights on regional security challenges facing Somalia. As CEO of Fort Roche, a London-based security firm, Ferro brings extensive expertise to a discussion centred on escalating Red Sea tensions, rising piracy, and Somalia’s strategic positioning.
The episode features on-the-ground reports from Somalia, Djibouti, and Ethiopia, highlighting increased piracy and geopolitical friction. Ferro critiques Ethiopia’s controversial port deal with Somaliland – an unrecognised state – calling it a threat to Somali sovereignty. He also underscores Djibouti’s strategic success amid Red Sea disruptions and outlines how Somalia must strengthen state control to match its neighbours.
Ferro faces pointed questions from two experts. Ahmedou Ould Abdallah, former UN envoy to Somalia, challenges him on resolving the long-running conflict with Al Shabaab and the future role of African Union troops (ATMIS). David Rigoulet-Roze, a specialist on Iranian geopolitics, probes Ferro’s stance on the evolving EU anti-piracy mission (ATALANTA) and how Somalia can navigate increasing global rivalries from powers like the U.S., China, Iran, Turkey, and the UAE.
Ferro’s answers reflect a vision of a sovereign, secure Somalia – one that actively engages global players while defending its national interests.
