What will Somalia look like after Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s election as president? At 66, the man who had already led this unstable Horn of Africa country between 2012 and 2017, won the support of the majority of Somali parliamentarians, ahead of the incumbent president Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, known as “Farmajo,” who defeated him five years ago.
The election, which took place after months of sometimes violent tensions surrounding its organization, was welcomed by the “international community” and the United Nations.
Somalia, torn apart by years of conflict, is facing terrorist attacks by Al-Shabab, an Al-Qaeda-affiliated militia. The country is also facing drought and a dire humanitarian situation amidst political rivalries.
Will President Sheikh Mohamoud truly be able to count on the support of international partners to meet the many challenges that lie ahead? What room for manoeuvre will he have in the face of a divided political class after more than a year of profound political crisis?
