Somalia’s history is marked by resilience and struggle, but also by moments of tragedy that have shaped our path. A recent documentary series, brought to us by Netflix and award-winning journalist Jamal Osman, shines a much-needed light on forward first-hand voices and untold perspectives of the Black Hawk Down incident in 1993, where the failed U.S. intervention in Somalia led to significant loss and deepened the global perception of Somalia as a failed state. The aftermath of that tragedy led to the withdrawal of international forces, leaving Somalia to descend further into chaos and violence. But that was just one chapter in a much longer story of survival and rebuilding.

It also forces us to confront the fact that true development cannot begin until we defeat the forces of terrorism that continue to plague us.
Today, Somalia finds itself at a critical crossroads. Our young people, often vulnerable, are increasingly being recruited by extremist groups like Al-Shabaab. This is a pressing issue we must address by offering hope, education, and opportunities for a better future. To do this, we must also tackle the economic challenges that keep many Somalis disenfranchised and disillusioned. A growing economy, with job opportunities and access to resources, is essential to giving every Somali a stake in the country’s future.
Corruption remains one of the key factors enabling terrorism. Millions of dollars meant for development are siphoned off, fuelling violence and sustaining the cycle of instability.
