Everyone anticipated Abshir Aden Ferro would run in Somalia’s presidential elections. However, he decided against it and explained why.
A new chapter begins for Somalia, and I congratulate President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, despite the circumstances of his “election” on May 15. After consulting with the activists and leadership of my party, the Alliance for the Future, which now boasts over 1.2 million members, I chose not to run for president.
The corruption under former President Farmaajo created a climate never seen before in Somali elections. Even in an indirect system, this election felt more like a carefully orchestrated “selection” than a legitimate process. Corruption remains the primary issue facing Somalia, as I noted in my book, My Life for Somalia.
The current electoral system is not the one I stand for, and I will continue fighting for “One man, one vote” in the next presidential election. The people deserve their voice – this is the foundation of democracy.
However, in the face of Al-Shabaab terrorism, it was crucial to avoid deepening divisions. Despite not being a candidate, we worked to ensure the defeat of the outgoing president, who illegally stayed in power since February 2021 and severely damaged Somalia’s international reputation.
I hope that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud can foster the conditions for renewal, dialogue, and unity against extremism. Now, more than ever, it is time for Somalia to reunite and build national unity.
