By Abshir Aden Ferro
In his thought-provoking op-ed “From Apathy to Action,” Somali presidential candidate Abshir Aden Ferro issues a powerful call for a new kind of governance – one that is responsive, accountable, and self-reliant. Writing with urgency and conviction, Ferro outlines the persistent challenges facing Somalia: political instability, economic disparity, rampant unemployment, and the ongoing threat of terrorism from extremist groups like Al-Shabaab.
He decries the Somali government’s slow and inadequate response to tribal violence across multiple regions, including Middle Shabelle, Gedo, and Hiraan, and highlights the need for national unity and proactive leadership. Ferro laments the economic stagnation and corruption – especially the mismanagement of aid – arguing that the reliance on foreign assistance has bred complacency and a colonial mindset that must be shed.
Instead, Ferro advocates for self-sufficiency through domestic production, entrepreneurship, and responsible governance. He believes the path to progress lies not in international handouts but in unlocking the Somali people’s full potential through hard work, unity, and belief in themselves.
His message is clear: it’s time for Somalia to reclaim its agency, reform its leadership, and empower its people to build a stronger, more respected nation from within.
