For the first time since 1969, Somalia is poised to embrace universal suffrage in 2024—a pivotal moment described by Abshir Aden Ferro, chairman of the Alliance for the Future, as a hard-won victory for democracy. After decades under an archaic, clan-based system dominated by indirect elections and corruption, 15 million Somalis will finally be able to choose their leaders freely.

Ferro, a former presidential candidate and author of My Life for Somalia, reflects on his party’s resistance to the flawed 2020 election agreement and their long struggle against an oligarchic system rooted in tribal affiliations and vote-buying.

He argues that universal suffrage is essential not only for restoring the state’s legitimacy but also for ending Somalia’s descent into violence and poverty. Ferro outlines three urgent priorities: investing in education to create informed voters, launching fundamental institutional reforms through inclusive national dialogue, and empowering youth who have long been neglected and radicalized.

This reform signals more than a change in voting—it is a chance to reshape Somalia’s future, restore national unity, and build a peaceful, democratic state free from terrorism and systemic corruption.
